In plain words

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy, also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT, uses a hand-held applicator to send short, strong pressure pulses through the skin into a painful tendon and the tissue around it.

There are no needles, no cuts and no electrical current. It is thought to work by triggering a healing response in the tissue, but exactly how it works is not fully understood.

At Kinisi it is used for some persistent tendon problems, usually ones that have lasted months, after an assessment.

Where it may be considered

Heel and tendon problems Leo assesses for shockwave

Shockwave is considered after a proper diagnosis, not as a first step for every sore spot.

  • Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)

Pain under the heel, often worst with the first steps in the morning.

  • Achilles tendon pain

Pain or stiffness at the back of the ankle or heel, often linked to running or walking load.

  • Tennis elbow

Pain on the outside of the elbow with gripping or lifting.

  • Outer hip pain

Pain over the side of the hip (greater trochanteric pain), often worse lying on that side.

  • Kneecap tendon pain

Pain just below the kneecap with jumping, squatting or stairs.

What the evidence says

Research results for shockwave are mixed. The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) describes the evidence for heel pain, tennis elbow and Achilles tendon pain as inconsistent.

That's why Leo uses shockwave as one part of a plan, not on its own, and reviews whether it is helping. Results vary from person to person, and it isn't suitable for everyone.

What to expect

What a session is like

  1. Finding the spot

Leo locates the most tender area and checks it against your assessment findings.

  2. The treatment

Gel goes on the skin and the applicator delivers pulses for a few minutes. The intensity is set to what you can tolerate.

  3. Afterwards

Most people walk out as normal. Some redness, swelling or soreness for a day or two is common. Leo will tell you what activity to keep doing and what to ease off.

Before you book

Your questions, answered

Shockwave therapy FAQs

Can I book a shockwave session straight away?

Not as a new patient. Shockwave sessions in the online booking are for existing patients. Start with the 45-minute Initial Consultation, so Leo can confirm the diagnosis and check that shockwave is suitable.

Does it hurt?

It can be uncomfortable while the pulses are applied, especially over the sorest spot. The intensity is adjusted to what you can tolerate, and you can ask to stop at any time.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with the problem and how you respond. Leo recommends a number after your assessment and reviews your progress as you go, rather than booking a fixed package up front.

What does it cost?

The Initial Consultation is $89, November Special, usually $150$150. After that, a 10-minute Shockwave Therapy Session is $120, or a 20-minute Shockwave Therapy plus Treatment session (which includes a standard adjustment) is $185.

Can I claim on my health fund?

Rebates depend on your fund and extras cover. Ask your fund what you can claim for chiropractic consultations before you book.

Is shockwave used on its own?

Usually not. Research results for shockwave are mixed, so Leo uses it as one part of a plan, typically alongside exercises that gradually load the tendon.
