Safety first

When to see a GP or emergency first

Call 000 or see a doctor urgently if you have back or neck pain with:

  • loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or buttocks
  • leg weakness that is getting worse
  • pain after a fall, crash or other significant injury
  • fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer
  • chest pain, or a sudden severe headache unlike any before

Leo screens for these warning signs at every first visit and refers you on if needed.

New or ongoing

Recent pain, or pain that keeps coming back

Most people come in with one of two kinds of pain. The assessment is the same, but the plan differs.

Recent pain (days to weeks)

The focus is on finding what set it off, settling what aggravates it and keeping you moving safely while it recovers.

Persistent or recurring pain (months)

The focus is on the factors that keep it going, building your capacity for work, sport and daily life, and working with your GP where needed.

Areas Leo assesses:

  • Lower back
  • Neck
  • Upper back
  • Sciatica-type leg pain
  • Nerve-type arm pain
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Headaches linked to the neck

How the assessment works

  1. Your story

When it started, what eases it and what makes it worse, and how it affects work, sleep and training.

  2. Examination

Orthopaedic and neurological tests, plus a check of how you move, not just where it hurts.

  3. Findings and plan

What Leo found in plain words, your options, and points at which progress will be reviewed.

Care options

What care may include

Hands-on care

Adjustments, mobilisation or soft tissue work, depending on what the assessment shows.

Exercise and rehab

Movements and strength work to continue between visits.

Electrical stimulation

TENS-style stimulation may be added to a treatment session for some people.

Referral

To your GP, for imaging or to another practitioner when that is the better path.

Options depend on your assessment. Leo explains each one, along with its risks, before using it.

Your plan

What to expect over the first few weeks

You should always know what the plan is, why, and when it will be reviewed.

  • An estimate of how many visits to expect, reviewed as you go
  • Exercises to do between appointments
  • A clear point to change approach if progress stalls
  • Referral if your symptoms suggest another cause
  • You decide whether to continue at each stage

Your questions, answered

Back and neck pain FAQs

Do I need a scan or a GP referral first?

Usually not for a private appointment. Leo will tell you if a scan or GP review is needed. DVA, EPC and WorkCover have their own referral rules.

Can chiropractic help my pain?

It depends on the cause. Chiropractic care is one option for many back, neck and joint problems. After assessing you, Leo will tell you whether it suits you or who to see instead.

Is Kinisi a pain management clinic?

No. Kinisi is a chiropractic clinic. For complex persistent pain that needs medication or a specialist program, your GP can refer you to a pain service, and Leo can work alongside that care.

How soon can I be seen?

Check online booking for the next available time. The clinic opens Monday to Thursday, with Monday and Wednesday appointments until 7pm, and Saturdays by appointment.

Do you see WorkCover, DVA and EPC patients?

Yes. Mention it when you book and bring your claim details, referral or care plan. DVA treatment is claimed directly, with no gap.

What if I am not improving?

Your progress is reviewed at set points. If things aren't changing as expected, Leo will talk you through other options, including referral.
